Costella swims to record

TORONTO - One day after qualifying for the Olympic Trials in the 400-meter individual medley, Carson Tigershark swimmer Lauren Costella came right back to place fourth in the 800-meter freestyle at the Canadian National Championships.

Her time of 8 minutes, 54.93 seconds is a personal best and a Tigershark club record. She had already qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 800.

Tigershark coach Jack Simon said Costella's fourth place was especially impressive considering she swam her time in an early "slow" heat because her pre-meet qualifying time did not place her in the fastest heat of the day.

In other events in Toronto on Thursday, Evan Fischer was 26th in the 100 breaststroke and Justin Barber was 18th in the 400 freestyle with the time of 4:08.22, a personal record by six seconds.

The Tigersharks will continue to compete at the meet through Saturday. Costella will swim in the 400 freestyle, where she needs a 4:20.9 to qualify for the Olympic Trials in that event.
