Piper, Middle Carson River group awarded water quality honors

Kevin Piper and the Middle Carson River Coordinated Resource Management Group has been selected to receive the Wendell McCurry Excellence in Water Quality Award. This award recognizes individuals, firms, organizations and government entities that have made significant contributions to improving the quality of Nevada's water resources.

The CRMP group, under Piper's leadership as Watershed Coordinator, has completed a number of bank stabilization projects and is promoting the use of bioengineering techniques for erosion control. Bioengineering utilizes vegetation in addition to "hard" structures such as rip-rap to mitigate severely eroding riverbanks, reduce sediment concentrations and restore wildlife habitat.

The award will be presented at 2 p.m. Thursday in room 138, 333 W. Nye Lane.
