Obituary: Archie Pozzi

A service for Archie Pozzi, 81, a long-time Nevada legislator and American Legion leader will be at 4 p.m. Monday at St. Peters Episcopal Church.

Mr. Pozzi died Nov. 29, 2000. He was born Jan. 7, 1919, in Oakland, Calif., to Archie Sr. and Leola Pozzi, former Carson City residents.

He graduated from Carson High School in 1936 where he starred on the state championship basketball team that year. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1941. While there, he was senior class president and a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

He entered the family business, Pozzi Motor Co., in 1946, joining his father in the Carson City Ford dealership. He sold the company in 1982 after it had been in the family for 60 years.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Kerak Shrine Temple, Carson Host Lions and served on the Carson City Planning Commission for 10 years. He was also on the Nevada State Museum Board, 1951-54 and a member of the Carson 20-30 Club.

He was past commander of the Nevada Department of American Legion, 1951-52, national vice commander 1988-89 and served as national executive committeeman at the time of his death.

He served Carson City and Ormsby County in the Nevada State Legislature as an Assemblyman from 1955-66 and as Senator from 1967-74.

He was a high school and college basketball referee for more than 25 years and was honored in 1965 when the Northern Nevada Conference dedicated its zone championship in his name.

He was the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year for 1991-92.

Mr. Pozzi was preceded in death by his wife Helen in February 2000.

Among his survivors are his children Bruce and Kathie, both of Anchorage, Alaska, Bob of Reno, Steve of Carson City and Michele of Danville, Calif. ; sister Virginia Pozzi of Carson City and four grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant.

His ashes will be scattered at Lake Tahoe and in Carson City.
