Junior midget Senators fall

The Carson Senators fell short in a defensive battle against the Sparks Giants, 12-6, on Friday night at Don Mello Field in Sparks.

The Senators defense recovered from a poor showing against Fallon the week before, holding the Giants

to only two touchdowns and no extra points.

The Carson offense once again showed promise running up the middle, but untimely penalties and a third quarter turnover on a fumble stalled the running game.

Carson threatened in the fourth quarter. Trailing by 12 points with three minutes to go in the game, the Senators put together a dramatic series of plays. After Jacquet's kick return to midfield, the Senators responded with a trick pass play for a 50-yard touchdown, beginning with a lateral pass from quarterback Nick Bacon Bacon to Travis Trethan, then a forward pass to Sean Staggs who ran 35 yards for the score.

Jacquet pooched the ball behind the Giants front line and the ball was recovered by the Senators' Alvin Smith. The Senators moved within striking range but penalties and good pass defense by Sparks denied the comeback.

Carson rushed for 63 yards and no scores. Kevin Holmes rushed for 13 yards on eight carries, Jack Jacquet 38 yards on six carries and Sean Staggs 10 yards on three carries.

Bacon completed three passes for 18 yards on eight attempts. Staggs led the receiving corps with 59 yards on three catches, followed by Trethan with one catch for 12 yards and Holmes with one catch for 1 yard.

Defense was a bright spot for the Senators, allowing only two scores and holding the Sparks team on several key possessions deep in its own territory. The defense continually fought poor field position but managed to keep the game within one score through three quarters.

The defense was lead by Jeremiah Schenzel who made 11 unassisted tackles. Schenzel was assisted by Bryon Wilson and William Donnelly with five tackles each. Both Donovan Dean and Ahron Osheroff stepped up in the second half with some dramatic plays in the Sparks backfield. Contributions were made by Alvin Smith, Robert

Frederick, Sean Gibbons, Kyle Watkins, Mitchell Grover, and Chris Ames.

This coming Friday, the Senators play the Reno Razorbacks in a 6 p.m. contest at Mira Loma Park in Reno.
