Carson teens attend jamboree

Mike Sturm and Brian Murphy recently returned from a 16-day trip to the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Fredericksburg, Va.

Mike, 17, and Brian, 14, were among 40,000 Boy Scouts, leaders and volunteers, who spent 10 days at the Jamboree.

They also got to spend six days touring Washington D.C.

"It was pretty amazing seeing all the sights," said Brian whose father, Bill, suggested he go.

"He said this is something you might like to do."

The teens earned a merit badge and a half while they were away. They got their auto mechanics badge by working as pit crew members on the Marines NASCAR racer.

They also both completed part of the requirements for the traffic safety badge.

While in Washington, D.C. they had their picture taken with Nevada senators Harry Reid and John Ensign.

Mike is the son of Danna and Pepper Sturm. Brian is the son of Bill and Christy Murphy.

Both teens will attend Carson High School in the fall. Mike will be a senior this year and Brian a freshman.

This was the 20th year that the National Scout Jamboree was held at Fort A. P. Hill in Caroline County, Va., near the towns of Fredericksburg and Bowling Green. The installation was named in honor of Lt. General Ambrose Powell Hill, a Virginia native who distinguished himself as a Confederate commander.

Scouts camp out at the 76,000-acre U.S. Army base, which has served as the site for the jamboree since 1981.
