Opening weekend attendance for “Blithe Spirit” was the largest Carson Valley Community Theater has ever had for a nonmusical production.
The Noel Coward English comedy continues this weekend with shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the CVIC Hall.
“The cast was right on, and we had a good crowd. We’re hoping for even bigger crowds this weekend,” Director Margaret Edson said. “English humor is different from our humor, but even people who don’t know English humor, really love Noel Coward.”
Edson credits the cast and stage crew for the increase in numbers.
“I’m proud of the cast. The spirits were smiling on me when these people auditioned,” she said. “The special effects at the end of the show were beyond my expectations. They are amazing.”
“Blithe Spirit” revolves around novelist and socialite Charles Condomine who invites the eccentric medium Madame Arcati to his house to conduct a seance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when Madame Arcati inadvertantly summons the ghost of his first wife, Elvira.
Since its premier in the West end of London in 1941, “Blithe Spirit” has also played on Broadway and had been adapted for film, television and radio. For her role as Madame Arcati, Angela Lansbury won a Tony Award for best Featured Actress in the 2009 Broadway revival.
Tickets are $15 general admission, and $13 for students and seniors. A dinner and show package at Minden Food Company is $49.
