Meeting the people who used the equipment displayed at the antique tractor and engine show is what motivates Pat Geary to host the event each year.

The show is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 17, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 at 1000 East Valley Road in south Gardnerville.

“I enjoy meeting people, and talking with older people who actually used the machines,” Geary said. “Now it is so automated, it’s not as hard to be a farmer as it was then.”

Spread out across Geary’s 30-acre property will be 60 antique tractors, 25 antique engines, a swap meet, a tractor pull, parade, games and children’s activities.

To qualify as antique, a tractor must be a 1960 or older, and the engine can’t be more than 100 horsepower.

“We do this so people can look at the way things were done 50,60, 70 years ago,” Geary said. “We’re trying to preserve the lost art of how people worked so hard back then.”

Contestants have until Aug. 17 to sign up for the tractor pull where a 4,000-pound antique tractor tries to pull a 12,000-pound sled the farthest.

“It’s exciting to watch a little old tractor pull this giant sled,” Geary said. “It’s pretty popular. The bleachers are packed the whole time.”

There will also be tractor games such as corn planting and toilet seat tossing.

“The Corn Man” is giving a free hands-on demonstration of corn grinding.

“He goes through 100 years of corn during the show grinding it up and making bird feed for people to take home,” Geary said.

There will also be a swap meet of tractor-related and other items.

To reserve space in the swap meet for both days costs $25.

Shuttles to the show are available from the parking lot off Pinenut Road.

Cost is $5 for adults, and free for children. Entrants receive a $2 off coupon good for use in the store for T-shirts, hats and buttons.
