Youth volleyball sign-ups being taken

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department will take registration for its youth and teen volleyball leagues through March 16.

Cost is $75 and includes all equipment, official fees, awards and a T-shirt.

The season begins April 14 will all games played on Saturdays at Carson Valley Middle School.

Each team requires a volunteer coach. Anyone interested in coaching can complete a coach’s application at the recreation department.

Carson Valley Babe Ruth sign-ups

Carson Valley Babe Ruth will host sign-ups for the 2012 season Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Line Drive U in Minden off of Johnson Lane.

Sign-ups are open to players ages 13 to 15 for a season that runs from April through July with practice starting in March.

Carson Valley Babe Ruth will be based out of Lampe Park, but will play games in Dayton and Carson City as well.

Cost is $135.

Volunteers needed for Fishing Derby

The 23rd annual Kids Fishing Derby, scheduled for June 2-3 at Lampe Park, is in need of more than 300 volunteers to make the event a success.

The two-day event annually draws more than 1,500 participants between the aces of 3 and 12.

Volunteer registration forms are available at the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department, Raley’s Supermarket in Gardnerville and The Angler’s Edge in Gardnerville.


coaching clinic

Line Drive U in Minden will offer a one-day coaches clinic instructed by University of Nevada softball coach Matt Meuchel March 12.

A session for U6-U10 coaches runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and a session for U.12-U18 coaches will run from 7 to 9 p.m.

Cost is $20.

Adult soccer


The Carson Valley Adult Coed Soccer League is accepting sign-ups for the 2012 spring season through Friday. Cost is $540 per team.

Individuals looking to be placed on a team can also be accomodated.

Games are played on Sundays starting March 25 and include at least eight regular season contests with a single-elimination postseason tournament.

All games will be played at the Carson Valley Middle School soccer field.

Carson Valley Men’s Golf Club sign-ups

The Carson Valley Men’s Golf Club is accepting membership applications for the 2012 season.

The first tournament is on March 24 at the Carson Valley Golf Course.

Tournaments will be every Sunday morning until Nov. 4 with 33 scheduled tournaments.

There will be an awards banquet for all members the day after the final tournament. Dues for 2012 are $55, which includes NNGA membership for the year. All tournaments are handicapped and flighted, so that all participants have an excellent chance to win prize money.

A variety of tournament formats, such as individual stroke play, best ball, Stableford, Chapman, team play and scrambles, are conducted.

The club also conducts a President’s Cup and Club Championship.

Genoa Lakes Ladies Golf Club

The Genoa Lakes Ladies Golf Club invites all women golfers to join its 19th season of tournament/social play.

Tuesday weekly events, as well as Northern Nevada Women’s Golf Association activities, will begin April 3.

Applicants need not be members at Genoa Lakes and, if not, will receive a reduced green fee on days of play.

Adult softball sign-ups

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department Summer Softball League early registration starts March 5.

Cost is $700 per team for two nights per week and $475 for one night per week.

After April 6, the cost bumps up $50 per team to $750 and $525.

Registration deadline is April 13. Awards will be given for league and tournament winners.

Game times will be between 6:30 and 9 p.m. Participants must be 18 years old or older.

Leagues available are women’s (Mondays), men’s D (Tuesdays), men’s open (Mondays & Wednesdays) and coed open (Thursdays).

Intro to junior golf

The Carson Valley Golf Course will host an introduction to junior golf clinic on April 14.

Children ages 5-6 go from noon to 1:15 p.m., 7-8 go 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. and 9-16 go 3 to 4:15 p.m.

Juniors will learn the basics of golf, including chipping, putting, full swing, rules & etiquette. Clubs, golf balls and refreshments will be provided.

Cost is $20.

Junior golf program

Carson Valley Golf Course will host a six-week spring junior golf program starting the week of April 16 with Wednesday sessions at 4 and 5 p.m. and Saturday sessions at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.

Juniors will attend once a week for 50 minutes. Students will be grouped based on age and experience.

Cost is $130 for the six sessions and includes use of clubs, instruction and a junior range pass ($29 value). The program is open to ages 5-16. Discounts are available for families with more than one child participating.

Molly Awards nominations sought

MEFIYI (Me-for-Incredible-Youth, Inc.) presents the eighth annual Molly Youth Awards Banquet sponsored by Greater Nevada Credit Union, GE Energy and Nevada State Bank.

The Molly Youth Awards Banquet is scheduled for Monday, May 14, 2012 at Genoa Lakes Golf Club. The event is named after former Douglas High School student-athlete, Molly Lahlum.

The Molly Youth Awards honor the outstanding youth of Douglas County. Applicants eligible for this recognition must be between the ages of 9 and 18 and a resident of Douglas County.

The nominated student-athletes must qualify in each of the following areas: academic excellence, athletic participation and community service.

Three $1,000 college scholarships will be awarded to seniors who apply and become honorees of this year’s event.

Senior honorees automatically become candidates to receive the college scholarship awards. Forty student-athletes will be selected for the 2012 class.

A completed nomination form must be postmarked or e-mailed by April 23.

Douglas football alumni golf tournament

The Douglas High football program will host an alumni golf tournament June 16 for former players, coaches and family at the Genoa Resort Golf Course.

Cost is $100 per person, and $400 per foursome prior to May 1. After May 1, is will be $125 per person.

Hole sponsors start at $100 per hole.

A T-shirt and dinner is included for all participants.

Shotgun start is 1:30 p.m. Dinner will be at the Genoa Town Hall and will include tri tip, chicken, beans, salad and drinks.
