Swimming: Johnston signs with Colorado Mesa
May 30, 2013
While Douglas senior Kyle Johnston graduates from high school Friday, he sealed his college future two weeks ago.
Johnston, one of Douglas' most decorated swimmers over the past four years, signed a letter of intent with Colorado Mesa University just days after winning the Northern Division I Regional title in both the 100 fly and 200 individual medley earlier this month.
"I contacted them last summer and ended up getting to talk with the coaches," Johnston said. "It kind of went from there.
"They'll see what I'm good at once I get out there and then find the areas where I can specialize. They were taking about putting me in the middle distances, but we'll see what happens."
Johnston won five regional titles during his time at Douglas, including two individual and one relay title this season. He also won an additional six individual league titles during his four years.
Johnston said the fact that Colorado Mesa offered an opportunity to get out of state was an attractive facet for him in his search.
"It's a Division II school and I just liked everything about it," he said, adding that they offered his preferred major — sports management.
Although being part of NCAA Division II, Colorado Mesa competes in several large Division I meets during the year.
The Mavericks sent six athlete to the national championships this past year.
