Cycling stage race begins today

Cyclists will ride this weekend in Diamond Valley and the streets of downtown Minden as part of the Little City Stage Race.

Hosted by Tour de Nez Outreach, competition begins today at 1 p.m. with the Diamond Valley Road Race near Woodfords in Alpine County. The stage race concludes Sunday with the Diamond Valley Time Trial and the Minden Criterium starting at 8 a.m.

The criterium course start and finish line is on Esmeralda Avenue near Minden Park. The road race and time trial both begin at Diamond Valley Elementary School.

Action shifts to Fernley on Saturday for a circuit race that starts at 10:30 a.m.

‘Wounded Warrior’ golf on Aug. 11

Registration is now open for the Genoa Open Golf Tournament for Warriors on Aug. 11 at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club.

The tournament is a four-person scramble on the Genoa Lakes Ranch Course. A 9 a.m. shotgun start is scheduled. The cost is $100, which includes a box lunch.

Youth football camp next week

The Douglas Tiger Youth Football Camp is being held Tuesday through Thursday for third through eighth grade students.

Instruction during the non contact camp at Douglas High School will focus on basic fundamental skills.

South Tahoe all-comers meet Tuesday

A series of all-comers track and field meets opens Tuesday in South Lake Tahoe.

The meet begins at 5 p.m. with youth races and long jump (2-7 year olds) at the South Tahoe Community Sports Complex, located at the South Tahoe Middle School. Regular field events begin at 5:30 p.m. and running events at 5:45 p.m. The events — running events, including hurdles and up to 3,000 meters, in addition to long jump, high jump, pole vault, discus and shot put — are free of charge, although donations are welcome.

The meets will be held each Tuesday through July 29, presented by AD Sports Tahoe and Big George Ventures. The summer all-comers meets have been a tradition at the South Tahoe all-weather track since it was moved from Echo Summit after the 1968 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Visit for information.

Volunteer football coaches needed

Volunteer coaches are needed for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department Youth NFL Flag Football Program. The program includes 5-6, 7-8, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18 year old divisions for boys and girls. Coaches’ application and background checks are required for all coaches and must be received by Aug. 8.

Games will be held on Saturdays at Stodick Park in September, October and November. A player draft will be held Aug. 13-14 and pre-season player skills training is scheduled for Aug. 26-27.

Minden Ranch Rodeo Aug. 2-3

The Minden Ranch Rodeo — the “Buckaroo Fest” — will be held as part of the State of Nevada Sesquicentennial Fair celebration at Fuji in Carson City on Aug. 2-3.

Minden Ranch Rodeo, which originated in 1999, is sanctioned through the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association. All qualifying ranch teams and top 15 individual event contestants will be invited to compete at the annual WSRRA National Finals Rodeo held the first week of November in Winnemucca.

The list of events for this year’s rodeo includes ranch bronc riding, women’s steer roping, calf roping, team roping, double mugging, ranch horse, branding, doctoring, trailer loading and wild cow milking.

Proceeds from the event are used to establish scholarships for local area high school rodeo youth and other charitable organizations.
