The Douglas High School Developmental Basketball League is accepting sign-ups for the 2013 edition.The league, which originated in 1987, is directed and monitored by the Douglas High basketball coaching staff. Current Douglas High players assist in fundamental drills and in league play.The league is open to boys and girls in first through sixth grades. It runs on Saturdays only on Jan. 12 and 19 and Feb. 2 and 9 from 9 a.m. to noon.Cost is $75 per camper, and $60 per participant in families of two or more participating children.For more information, or to register, visit cvbahoops.netDLeague.html.
The Tahoe-Douglas Elks Lodge is sponsoring its annual Hoop Shoot National Basketball Free Throw Contest on Jan. 8 at Meneley Elementary School at 3:30 p.m.The contest is open to all Douglas County residents ages 8 to 13.For more information, call Gary Wendt at (775) 265-6136.
Topaz Lake Park season passes for 2013 are available from the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department for $70 for Douglas County residents and $25 for seniors ages 55 and older.Interested parties must bring the vehicle and two valid proofs of Douglas County residency at the time of purchase. Silver Strike Lanes in the Gardnerville Ranchos is forming a pair of bowling leagues for the coming month.The first is “Battle of the Businesses,” which will be Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. starting Jan. 8 and running four weeks.There will be four different games (Scotch doubles, 9 pin, 3-6-9 and standard) played each night of the league. First place prize money and the business name on a trophy displayed at the bowling alley will go to the winner.Each participant gets ad time on the monitors throughout the bowling center and businesses can give away raffle prizes. Cost is $25 per team, per week.Registration is available online at bowlsilverstrikelanes.com. A second league will be “Beat Your Own Average” where participants compete against themselves week to week.The league starts Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. and runs for 15 weeks. Cost is $15 per week for 10 weeks. The last five weeks, no linage will be due. $3.75 per oerson, per week will go back into the prize fund. Each bowler receives one point for bowling their current average, plus one point for every 10 pins over their average and minus one point for every 10 pins under the average.
