Tickets are still available for the fifth annual Jethro's Charity King Crab & Steak Cookout tonight at Jethro's Bar & Grill in the Ranchos.

Starting at 6 p.m., the event will include such raffle and auction prizes as NASCAR pace car hood, four Los Angeles Dodgers VIP game tickets, tickets for a San Francisco Giants-Milwaukee Brewers game, and a Nevada-UNLV football seven-day vacation getaway (Nevada game tickets include sideline passes). Live entertainment will be provided by Groove Session.

Proceeds will go to four organizations: The Douglas County Community Center Scholarship Program (For Kids & Seniors), the soon-to-be opened FISH (Friends In Service Helping) Dining Room in the Ranchos, Douglas High Volleyball and MEFIYI. Call Jethro's at 265-2215 for information.

hunter safety class Saturday

A hunter safety class is being hosted by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, 1038 Buckeye Road, Minden.

Completion of a work book is mandatory prior to the class; the work book can be obtained at the Sheriff's Office or purchased on line. The cost of the course is $5 unless the participant is under 18. Registration fees for students under 18 years of age will be paid for by the Carson Valley Chukar Club.

girls softball meeting Sept. 2

Carson Valley Fastpitch will hold elections for board positions at 6 p.m. on Sept. 2 at Line Drive University, 2577 Nowlin Rd., (off Johnson Lane).

Anyone interested in filling a board position must submit a letter of intent, postmarked by Wednesday, to Carson Valley Fastpitch, P.O. Box 2142, Minden, NV 89423. Letters may also be emailed to by Aug. 25.

Introduction to golf class open for juniors

An introduction to junior golf class on Sept. 6 at the Carson Valley Golf Course is being offered by the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department.

Participants 5 to 16 years of age will be divided into three groups based on age. The 5-6 year-old age class is from noon-1:15 p.m., 7-8 year-olds meet from 1:30-2:45 p.m. and 9-16 year-olds from 3-4:15 p.m.

Classes will be taught by Carson Valley Golf Course professionals. The cost of the class is $20, which includes club rental and golf balls. Refreshments will also be provided.

Raiders booster club holds membership drive

The Carson City Raiders Booster Club is holding its annual membership drive and picnic on Saturday at Dayton State Park starting at 11 a.m.

The picnic is free for members, and fans are invited to attend for $5 per person or $15 per family. Membership dues are $30 per person or $40 per family. The club will provide burgers, hot dogs and water.

Attendees are asked to bring side dishes to share. RSVP to Ed Cabello at 246-4662 or by Aug. 14.

The group meets to watch every regular season game at Carson Lanes' Eleventh Frame Lounge.

Volleyball class offered for youth

The Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a Youth Volleyball Skills Class for fifth-through-eighth grade girls and boys that will extend from August until December.

Sessions will be held On Wednesdays from Aug. 20-Dec. 3 and on Fridays from Aug. 22-Dec. 5 from 6-8:30 p.m. each night in the Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School main gym.

Dan Hannah will instruct the classes with a focus on fundamental skills.

Free trial classes will be available on the two opening nights — Aug. 20 and Aug. 22 — for those who are not sure they want to commit to the entire course.

The cost is $175 per session and $300 for students who participate in both sessions.
