The Gardnerville Freedom 5K Fun Run/Walk is today from Heritage Park.

Participants are encouraged to express their Fourth of July spirit by wearing patriotic costumes for an event that starts at 8 a.m., followed by the walk at 8:15.

The registration fee is $20 on the day of the event — there is no registration fee for veterans and active military personnel — and family rates are available.

Ponderosa Ridge Run on Saturday

Mounatin endurance runners will have a chance to challenge themselves Saturday when the 40th annual Ponderosa Ridge Run is held from Spooner Summit to Kingsbury.

The 9.5-mile trail run starts at 10 a.m. from the Spooner Summit Maintenance Station on Highway 50 and finishes at the end of North Benjamin Drive off Kingsbury Grade.

The course starts at an elevation of 7,300 feet and climbs nearly 2,000 feet in the first 4-1/2 miles.

Rick Gentry set the course record of 1 hour, 1 minute and 23 seconds in 1986.

King crab and steak fundraiser Aug. 15

Tickets are now on sale for the fifth annual Jethro's Charity King Crab & Steak Cookout on Aug. 15 at Jethro's Bar & Grill, 1281 Kimmerling Road in the Ranchos.

The event will be held from 6-9 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased at three locations: Saletti's Restaurant & Bar in Minden, Jethro's and the Douglas Parks and Recreation Department.

This year the recipients of the proceeds will go to these four organizations: Douglas County Community Center Scholarship Program (For Kids & Seniors), the new, soon-to-be opened FISH (Friends In Service Helping) Dining Room in the Ranchos, Douglas High Volleyball and MEFIYI (Me for Incredible Youth).

Fun Fridays at CVGC

Fun Fridays are returning to the Carson Valley Golf Course. The special for players includes a regular adult green fee (9 or 18 holes) as well as a complimentary barbecue lunch at the new patio area. Season pass holders, Carson Valley Club members and multi-play ticket golfers may have lunch for $5. Call the Carson Valley Golf Course at 265-3181 for information.

Volunteer football coaches needed

Volunteer coaches are needed for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department Youth NFL Flag Football Program. The program includes 5-6, 7-8, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18 year old divisions for boys and girls. Coaches' application and background checks are required for all coaches and must be received by Aug. 8.

Games will be held on Saturdays at Stodick Park in September, October and November.

Kirkwood summer activities to begin

Summer adventures at Kirkwood kick off on Friday offering guests ample outdoor recreational opportunities including mountain biking, hiking, disc golf and horseback riding.

The Alpine County resort also hosts several popular events such as the Kirkwood Volunteer Fire Department BBQ, the 13th annual Kirkwood Wildflower Festival and the 13th annual Thin Air Chili Cook Off.

"We are looking forward to a great summer up here at Kirkwood," says Casey Blann, General Manager of Kirkwood Mountain Resort. "From exhilarating activities like mountain biking to more relaxed alpine hikes and horseback rides to family friendly events, we have something for everyone up here."

The resort will be open for summer operations through Aug. 31. Lift accessed hiking and biking will be available on weekends from 10 a.m.-4 p.m

Genoa Lakes hosts Wounded Warrior golf

Registration is now open for the Genoa Open Golf Tournament for Warriors on Aug. 11 at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club.

The tournament, billed as the "World's Largest Golf Outing" to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the Wounded Warrior Project, is a four-person scramble on the Genoa Lakes Ranch Course. A 9 a.m. shotgun start is scheduled.

Minden Ranch Rodeo Aug. 2-3

The Minden Ranch Rodeo — the "Buckaroo Fest" — will be held as part of the State of Nevada Sesquicentennial Fair celebration at Fuji in Carson City on Aug. 2-3.

Minden Ranch Rodeo, which originated in 1999, is sanctioned through the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association. All qualifying ranch teams and top 15 individual event contestants will be invited to compete at the annual WSRRA National Finals Rodeo held the first week of November in Winnemucca.

The list of events includes ranch bronc riding, women's steer roping, calf roping, team roping, double mugging, ranch horse, branding, doctoring, trailer loading and wild cow milking.

Proceeds are used to establish scholarships for local area high school rodeo youth and other charitable organizations. Visit for information.

Genoa Peak Madathon on Aug. 9

Registration is now open for the second annual Genoa Peak Madathon which will be held on Aug. 9.

Presented by Ascent Runs, the "Completely Mad" Madathon — a 26.2-mile full marathon from Genoa to the top of Genoa Peak, is scheduled to start at 6 a.m. from Genoa Park. The registration is currently $110 ($120 after July 9).

The "Only Half Mad" half-marathon — 13.1 miles that will take runners part way up the mountain — starts at 6:30 p.m. The registration fee is $75 ($85 after July 9).
