CVBAHoops season kickoff set for today

The Carson Valley Basketball Association (CVBAHoops) will host its season kickoff today from noon to 2 p.m. at Douglas High School.

Onsite sign-ups will be conducted for boys and girls ages 3rd through 11th grades. The event will include basketball drills, food, drinks, shooting machine and a chance for players and parents to meet the coaches.

Vendors on hand will include (Brad Cockman), Big Daddy's bike shop, Pulse Fitness, Cookie Boy, Tahoe Orthopedic Performance Nutrition and the Team Store by A Sign Shop.

Summer softball registration to begin

Early registration for the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department summer softball league will begin on March 3.

Games are scheduled to begin the week of April 21. All games are played from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Lampe Park. The schedule will include Monday nights for women's league, Tuesdays for men's D league, Tuesday or Wednesdays for men's Open and Thursdays for co-ed Open.

The cost is $475 per team for 10 games and a postseason tournament. After the early registration period ends on April 4, the cost will increase to $525 per team. The registration deadline is April 11.

Registration is taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Players must be 18 years or older to participate. Awards will be given for tournament play only.

Men's golf club taking applications for season

Memberships are now available for the Carson Valley Men's Golf Club's 2014 season.

The club has scheduled 32 weekly tournaments on Sunday mornings starting on March 16. The membership fee is $55, or $45 if you are a season pass holder at the Carson Valley Golf Course. The membership fee includes Northern Nevada Golf Association membership and a Basque dinner at the County Club Restaurant following the final tournament on Nov. 9.

The club offers a variety of tournaments which include individual stroke play, Stableford, team best ball, scrambles, Chapman, a club championship, a President's Cup and more. All tournaments are separated into handicapped flights.

Alta Alpina Challenge registration open

The Alta Alpina Cycling Club is hosting its annual challenge on June 28. This event allows cyclists to explore the eastern Sierra near Lake Tahoe on scenic roads from Carson Valley to Alpine County.

Participants can ride as little or as far as they want, up to 200 miles, or from the relatively flat foothills to the "the world's toughest double century" with more than 20,000 feet of climbing. The ride is limited to 499 riders. Frequent stops are provided for food and refreshments, as well as roving assistance vehicles, and a post-ride dinner. Visit for details or to register.
