Soccer: Douglas girls top Manogue, boys stumble

Staff Reports

The Douglas girls’ soccer team put together a strong match against Manogue Tuesday night, moving itself into full control of second place in the Sierra League with a 4-1 win in Reno.

The win was the Tigers’ fifth in a row and 12th in its last 13. Douglas closes out the season with its senior night tonight under the lights of Keith “Duke” Roman Field at 7 p.m. and then a trip to Carson on Monday at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, Douglas scooted out to a 4-0 lead before Manogue tacked on a late goal to spoil the shutout.

Senior Lexie Weaver scored a pair of goals, both unassisted, and Lindsey Adams and McKenna Kynett accounted for Douglas’ other two goals.

Kynett assisted on Adams’ goal.

“This was a great night for our two seniors, Lexie Weaver and Ericka Arellano” Douglas coach Lorraine Fitzhugh said. “Lexie’s fight up top was inspirational to the team, as was Ericka’s rock solid defense.

The Douglas boys’ soccer team was mathematically eliminated from the playoffs Wednesday night with a 1-0 loss to Manogue in Reno.

Manogue scored in the 75th minute to pick up the late win.

It was Manogue’s first win of the season, and first win since defeating Douglas 1-0 in Reno on Oct. 19, 2011.

Douglas dropped to 3-9-1 in Sierra League action with the loss. That, coupled with Carson’s win over Damonte Ranch left Douglas with no avenue to climb up the standings over the remaining two games.

Douglas faces Damonte Ranch (6-7-1) Saturday and travels to Carson (5-4-5) on Tuesday to close out the year.
