Regional wrestling championships start Friday

The Northern Division I Regional Wrestling Championships open Friday at Reno High School and continue through the weekend.

Defending regional champion Carson and perennial power Spanish Springs enter the tournament as the top contenders to claim the team title.

Spanish Springs produced five No. 1 seeds out of the High Desert League in the individual brackets while Carson produced six No. 1 seeds out of the Sierra League.

Opening Ceremonies are set for 3 p.m. today with the first round of wrestling scheduled to

begin on three mats directly after.

The Tigers are strongest in the upper weights as Zach Singer (195), Ian Kendrick (220) and Chance Thoene (285) all claimed No. 2 seeds out of the Sierra League.

David Whilden (138), Brandon James (152), Garrett Seward (145) and Parker Hoshizaki (160) carried No. 3 seeds and Adam Theilen (182), Jacob Moss (106) and Jason Trenkel (170) are No. 4 seeds.

Robbie Resnik (170) and Laird Anderson (126) are seeded No. 5 in their respective classes.

The top three placers in each weight class advance to next week’s state championships.

Douglas has sent at least one wrestler to state in each of at least the last 12 seasons. The last Tiger to win a regional title was Dillon Spates in 2011 (130 pounds). He went on to claim the state title that same season.

Admission to the tournament is set at $7 for adults and $5 for students. Children age 8 and younger and senior citizens are free.
