Tigers scrimmage Saturday
August 19, 2014
Another 10 days remain before the Douglas High School football team kicks off its 2014 season at the Best of the West Rocky Mountain Rumble in Pocatello, Idaho.
In the meantime, hometown fans will have an opportunity to see a preview of the 2014 Tigers Saturday when they host McQueen in a preseason scrimmage. The freshman and junior varsity teams will be in action on Keith Roman Field at 9 a.m. The varsity teams are scheduled to start their scrimmage between 10 and 10:30 a.m.
McQueen represents a good challenge, since the Lancers possess one of the richest high school football traditions in Northern Nevada (six state titles since the Northwest Reno school opened in 1982). McQueen defeated Douglas, 40-28, in week two of the 2013 season. The two teams are not scheduled to play each other this season.
Douglas is coming off a 2-8 record (1-3 Sierra League), however, they did succeed in extending the program's streak of consecutive playoff appearances to 13 seasons — and 17 in 18 years. A dozen players are back from that squad, led by returning starters Nick Abreu (quarterback), Cale Kynett (linebacker/running back), Kaleb Foster (linebacker/running back), Andrew Jensen (offensive and defensive line) and Zack Singer (offensive and defensive line).
Ernie Monfiletto is entering his third season as head coach at Douglas and 19th season overall with the program.
The Tigers have a formidable challenge in their official opener on Aug. 30 when they face Minico (Rupert, Idaho) in a 10:30 a.m. contest indoors at Holt Arena on the Idaho State University campus. The Minico Spartans lost only 10 seniors from a team that compiled a 5-5 record and finished third in the 4A Great Basin-West in 2013. Minico is one of the original Rocky Mountain Rumble participants — in 2013 the Spartans were 27-10 victors over Park City, Utah. Tim Perrigot has coached the program for the past 18 years (65-33 since 2004, according to the MaxPreps.com website).
Note: The Tigers' regular season Sierra League contest against Bishop Manogue has been changed to Oct. 4 in Reno. The Saturday game will kick off at 1 p.m. The date change request was made to accommodate Manogue's homecoming, according to Monfiletto. … The Tigers are scheduled to play their home opener on Sept. 12 against Reno in a game that will serve as induction night for the school's Football Hall of Fame.
