Tigers host Reno today
September 18, 2013
A strong start will quite likely be foremost on the minds of the Douglas Tigers today when they host Reno in Division I Northern cross-over boys soccer action.
Douglas (1-3 overall) comes into the 3:30 p.m. contest looking to end a two-game losing streak after dropping a 6-0 decision last Wednesday at Wooster and then falling in their season home opener on Saturday against Galena.
The Tigers followed a familiar pattern in the loss to Galena when they fell into a 3-0 deficit in the first half. It was similar the week before when they fell behind by three goals in a 3-2 season-opening loss at Reed.
Douglas coach Vince Brown viewed Saturday as two different games. The one he preferred, of course, was a second half in which the Tigers enjoyed a 1-0 advantage.
"We won the game we turned up to," Brown said. "We didn't turn up to the first half and lost it. We turned up for the second half, they played well, started hustling for the ball, it just wasn't there in the first half."
Galena (1-2) struck for two quick goals as Isaac Artinger scored in the ninth minute and sophomore Jesus Zamoro converted a penalty kick in the 11th minute. Quinn Hoelzer scored on another penalty kick in the 26th minute to extend Galena's lead to 3-0.
Oliver Lopez scored in the 45th minute, unfortunately, the Tigers were unable to pull any closer. Brown was still encouraged by what he saw after the intermission.
"We have things to work on and we realize that," Brown said. "The main thing is that we know what these guys can do. We've seen it in practice, it's getting them to do it in the game and getting them to jell together."
