Tigers edge Colts, 1-0

Staff Reports

Kali Sargent, 15

One run in the sixth inning and a clutch pitching performance by Kali Sargent were the difference Thursday as the Douglas High softball team pulled out a 1-0 Northern Division I victory at Wooster.

Corry Diaz, Allison Meyer and Kelly Sonnemann connected for successive singles to put the game's only run on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth.

Douglas improved its league record to 5-0 (7-2-1 overall) while Wooster dropped to 1-4 (4-6 overall).

"It was a pitcher's duel the whole way," Douglas coach Rob Parks said, "the type of game that is fun to play and watch from the stands."

But, also the type of game that will turn a coach's hair gray, he added.

Sargent pitched a complete game six-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks to outduel Wooster's Charyce Bailey, who allowed only five hits.

Sargent worked out of two different jams in which the Colts had runners on second and third with less than two outs. The junior right-hander ended the first threat with back-to-back strikeouts and ended the other on a pop fly and ground out.

"Offensively we had a difficult time getting anything going against Wooster's pitcher," Parks said. "She kept out batters off balance and their defense made some good plays to keep us from scoring."

Sargent pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to close out the game.

Sonnemann singled Diaz home with what proved to be the winning run. Leonna Mortimer, Makayla Shaver and Meyer accounted for the team's other three hits.

Shayna Landsberry hit 2-for-3 for Wooster.
