Terada leads Sierra pack
October 3, 2013
After withdrawing from her Sierra League match due to illness one week before, Douglas High School's Koko Terada had a point to prove on Tuesday when she stepped to the first tee at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City.
Terada was feeling much better, thank you, well enough to shoot 1-over par 73 to earn medalist honors on Eagle Valley's East Course.
The junior carded four birdies on the day to finish three shots ahead of Wooster's Staci Ludwig and help Douglas tie for third-place as a team.
"Koko played well, she left a few strokes out on the course," coach Stephen Gustafson observed. "Every time she had a birdie, unfortunately, she backed it up with a bogey.
"After last week's withdrawal it was important for her to play well this week," he added. "She needed to improve her cup point status to ensure her pairings with better players at regionals."
Bishop Manogue remained unbeaten with a 338 team score. Carson shot a season-best 369 to capture second-place while Douglas and Wooster tied for third.
Mari Pimental shot 93, Shelby Patterson 103 and Amanda Davidson 105 to complete the Tigers' team scoring. Carly Talia also shot 107 and Hunter Langford 136.
Pimental has improved her scores the last three weeks from 103 to 97 and now 93.
"Mari continued to play consistent as she has done all season," Gustafson said.
Davidson also showed major improvement from her last match, when she shot 132 at Wolf Run.
"We saw huge improvement in Amanda's score this week," Gustafson said. "She's been working really hard."
Since Douglas has already locked up a berth to the regional tournament in two weeks, Tuesday offered an opportunity for some new players to gain match experience, according to Gustafson.
"For Hunter and Shelby, it was their first tournament ever," he said. "We are losing 4 great seniors this year, and need to start developing players for next year."
For the season, Douglas is second in the league standings by three points over Wooster.
The Northern Division I Region Tournament, presented by Les Schwab Tires, will be held on Oct. 15-16 at Rosewood Lakes Golf Course in Reno. The first tee time is scheduled for 11:04 a.m. both days.
The Sierra League's final regularly scheduled match will be played on Wednesday at Rosewood Lakes, which is Wooster High's home course.
