Strong nucleus leads Douglas on track

With 100 boys and girls on the roster, led by a half-dozen individual qualifiers from the 2014 state meet, the Douglas High track and field program is upbeat coming into the start of its spring season.

The Tigers open Saturday with a conference meet at Galena. Hug will join Galena and Douglas for the meet, which gets under way at 9:30 a.m.

Among those state returnees are Lindsey Adams, Ian Isherwood, Morgan Weston, Olivia Abbott, Connor Lyons and Savannah Haase. All are seniors

Adams is a two-time defending region champion in the girls 800 and 1,600 meters. She ran school record and personal best times of 2:14.79 and 5:02.35 to place third at state in both events.

Adams also ran at the USA Cross Country Championships on Feb. 7 in Boulder Colo., where she finished 26th in the junior girls race in a time of 24:51 for 6 kilometers.

Abbott placed second in girls 400 at the region meet, where she ran a personal best time of 57.78. Abbott and Adams also ran legs for the Tigers' region championship 4×400 relay team.

Weston is the defending region champion in the girls discus (she threw a personal best of 131-3) and was a third-place medalist at the state meet.

Isherwood is the defending region boys pole vault champion (personal best 14-6) and went on to capture third-place at the state meet.

Haase was the region runner-up in the shot put (season best of 36-6-1/4) plus she had a season best throw of 103-4 in the discus.

Lyons was the region runner-up in the long jump (his personal best is 21-3-1/2).

Senior Nick Abreu placed fourth in the region boys pole vault finals (his best was 13-7) and was a region finalist in the boys 100 (season best time of 11.18). He also ran for the Tigers' state-qualifying 4×100 team.
