Mortimer, Diaz power Tigers past McQueen
March 21, 2014
Senior Leonna Mortimer and freshman Corryn Diaz combined to deliver six hits, including two home runs, to help the Douglas High softball team post a 5-1 Northern Division I win Thursday against McQueen.
Douglas (4-2-1 overall, 3-0 league) had its game called off Saturday when Hug was unable to field a complete lineup.
Mortimer slammed a home run over the left field fence in the first inning when the Tigers took a 2-0 lead. The left fielder finished 3-for-3 with two RBI.
Diaz hit 3-for-4 with a solo home run and scored three runs from her leadoff spot in the order.
Makayla Shaver also hit 2-for-3 with a double Allison Meyer also hit 1-for-3 with a double, and Kali Sargent 1-for-4. The Tigers collected 10 hits as a team.
That was more than enough support for the pitching of Sargent, who pitched a complete game three-hitter. She allowed one run (none earned), struck out eight and walked two. The Lancers scored their only run in the first inning.
Anna Zimmerman pitched all seven innings for McQueen (2-5, 0-2). She allowed four earned runs on 10 hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.
Note: The softball program is hosting its Family Bingo Night fundraiser next Saturday. The event starts at 6 p.m. in the high school commons.
