Miners rally past Tigers at Aces Ballpark
April 24, 2014
Aided by two-run rallies in the third and fourth innings, Bishop Manogue came from behind Tuesday afternoon to pull out a 4-3 Northern Division I baseball victory against Douglas at Aces Ballpark in Reno.
Douglas (15-7 overall, 9-4 league) scored once in the top of the first inning and added two more runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead, however, Manogue (11-9, 9-4) came back to secure a win that left the two teams tied for third-place in the league standings.
Kyle Johnson pitched the distance for the Tigers, as the senior right-hander allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
Douglas managed only four hits against Manogue pitcher Alec West.
The Tigers went up 1-0 in the first inning when Cale Kynett was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, advanced to second on a sacrifice and came around to score when Kaleb Foster’s ground ball was misplayed for an error.
After Manogue scored twice to take a 2-1 lead in the third, the Tigers answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth. Johnson doubled and then escaped from a rundown on an error after Cole Peck hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield. Kynett blasted a triple to drive Peck home with the go-ahead run.
The Miners regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth on Connor Nelson’s RBI double. Nelson hit 2-for-3 in the game. Connor Bohach also went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Douglas is scheduled to host Spanish Springs in a league doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at Tiger Field. The Tigers have already lost twice to Spanish Springs in tournament play this season, 12-1 on March 14 and then 3-2 on April 2 at Tiger Field.
