Grant Dunkelman, Tyler Cottrill lead Douglas skiers to third-place finish

Grant Dunkelman and Tyler Cottrill sped to career-best second- and fourth-place finish and the Douglas High boys finished third as a team Tuesday in the Tahoe Basin Ski League's final regular season race at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Douglas finished third in the boys team standings with 183 points — South Tahoe edged North Tahoe for first-place, 204-203 — and the Tigers also finished third in the combined team standings. South Tahoe emerged as the overall team winner with 399 points, ahead of North Tahoe (373) and Douglas (317).

Dunkelman, a senior, clocked a time of 1 minute, 2.98 seconds for two runs on Heavenly's World Cup Run to capture second place. South Tahoe's Connor McKeen won the race in 1:01.78, just over a second faster than Dunkelman. Cottrill was close behind in fourth-place with a time of 1:04.28.

Freshman Danner Hillman placed 15th in 1:14.70, Jon Pelcher finished 28th in 1:22.31, Bryan Harris 31st in 1:25.68, Sam Wilson 33rd (1:31.51), Logan Lalonde 34th 1:32.15 and Cole Pintler 42nd (1:35.19).

Dunkelman's previous best performance in the Tahoe Basin Ski League was third-place in January at Alpine Meadows. Cottrill's previous best had been a top-8 finish in a dual slalom on Jan. 29 at Heavenly.

In the girls race, Tara Cottrill led Douglas with her 15th-place effort of 1:18.27. Kate Hill also placed 22nd for the Tigers (1:24.48), Carolyn Wilbur 29th (1:36.50), Katya Koepsel 33rd (1:50.83) and Madison Jordan 39th (2:15.53).

South Tahoe's Maia Bickert won the girls race with a time of 1:02.96, nearly 2 seconds ahead of Truckee's Cheyenne Brown in the runner-up spot.

The state championships are scheduled to be held on Feb. 24-25 at Squaw Valley. The regional championship duals were held Thursday at Heavenly (results were no available at press time).
