Douglas passing tournament Friday

Staff Reports

Ernie Monfiletto

Eleven Northern Nevada high school football programs will be represented Friday when the inaugural Douglas Flying Tigers Passing Tournament is held at Douglas High School.

Play in the seven-on-seven passing tournament begins at 8 a.m. at Keith Roman Field and the school's practice fields. Each participating team will play five games, capped by the championship game at the end of the day.

"We're excited," said Ernie Monfiletto, who is entering his third season as head football coach at Douglas High School. "It's a great opportunity for us to compete and see how we can do under pressure."

Among the participating Northern Division I schools will be Reed, Hug, McQueen, Spanish Springs, North Valleys, Galena, Carson, Bishop Manogue, as well as Fallon and Fernley from the Northern Division I-A. Reed is the three-time defending Northern Division I champion. Fallon was the state Division I-A runner-up in 2013.

The passing league format isn't a true gauge of how any of the teams will perform in 2014, however, spectators will have an opportunity to see many of the North's top skill position athletes in action. Games are played on a smaller field field and there is no tackling or blocking. Admission is free for spectators.

"I think it will be fun," Monfiletto said. "We just finished three days of full-contact at a camp at Lake Tahoe, so now we're going to get an opportunity to hone our passing game."
