Douglas matmen fall short at Damonte Ranch

Douglas High School had five individual winners on Wednesday night, however, the Tigers came out on the short end of a 50-28 score against Damonte Ranch in a Sierra League wrestling dual meet in Reno.

Kindel Isham (106 pounds), David Whilden (138), Garrett Seward (152), Chance Thoene (220) and heavyweight Ian Kendrick emerged as winners in their matches for the Tigers.

Douglas (2-3 overall, 0-1 league) defeated Damonte Ranch 44-34 Saturday at the Capital City Duals in Carson City, however, the Mustangs were at full strength for the rematch.

“This was definitely not the same Damonte Ranch team we saw on Saturday,” Douglas coach David Singer said. “All of their kids are quality wrestlers … they were fourth at state (as a team) last year.”

Four of the Tigers’ five individual winners logged pinned their opponents.

Thoene, a state qualifier last season, won by fall in the first period to improve his season record to 5-0. Kendrick and Isham, a freshman, both won in the first period to improve to 4-1 on the season. Seward won in the opening period and Whilden won by a major decision, 15-8.

The Tigers compete again today and Saturday at the Cody Louk Invitational in Winnemucca.
