September 4, 2014
Led by 15 returning veterans from 2013, the Douglas High girls soccer team started its new season this past weekend with three straight victories in Southern Nevada.
Douglas opened Thursday with a 3-0 victory against Centennial, followed by a 12-0 win Friday at Boulder City and a 5-1 win Saturday at Pahrump.
The highlight was Saturday's game against a Pahrump team that won the Division I-A state championship in 2012 and finished as state runner-up behind South Tahoe in 2013.
Douglas is under the direction of first-year head coach Werner Christen and coming off a 14-2-2 record last season. The Tigers advanced to the region tournament semifinals before losing 1-0 to Galena.
Among the Tigers' key returnees are McKenna Kynett, Sierra League Offensive Player of the Year; Lexi Von Schottenstein, Midfielder of the Year; Hannah Coverley, first-team all-league midfielder; Alissa Holley, second-team all-league forward; Silvia Fernstrom, second-team all-league midfielder; Caitlin Jones, second-team all-league defender; Corryne Millett, second-team all-league goalkeeper; Camry Varble, honorable mention all-league midfielder; and Carly Johnson, honorable mention all-league defender. Coverley is entering her fourth season as a starter.
The Tigers return to action Saturday at North Valleys and play their home opener on Tuesday against McQueen. Douglas is at home for a non-league game on Sept. 18 against South Tahoe, which lost its opener Saturday against nationally ranked Montgomery (Santa Rosa, Calif.)
