Douglas baseball club 1-2 in region tourney
May 15, 2014
Kyle Johnson did it all for the Douglas High School baseball team in its 15-3 victory against Reed Tuesday afternoon in opening round play of the Northern Division I Region Tournament.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, they were unable to continue that momentum Wednesday in a 12-5 loss against Galena in a winners bracket contest in Reno. Galena (24-9) took a 4-1 lead in the first inning then Eric Anderson slugged a two-run homer in the second inning as the Grizzlies extended their lead to 6-2.
Douglas (17-13) was eliminated by Damonte Ranch Thursday, 4-0, at the University of Nevada’s Peccole Park.
Johnson was dominant Tuesday, however, as the fourth-year varsity veteran, pitched three-hit ball and pounded three-run homers in the third and fifth innings to lead the Tigers in a game called after five innings on the 10-run mercy rule.
The Tigers, who came in as the tournament’s No. 6 seed, scored five runs in the third inning and six runs in the fifth. They collected 13 hits, six of which went for extra bases.
Douglas added three more runs in the fourth, a rally highlighted by back-to-back doubles from Dillon Lopez and Matt Santos.
Johnson improved his record to 7-5 with two saves this season. Three of those losses have been decided by one run.
In Wednesday’s contest at Galena, Brock Raggio pitched six innings to earn credit for the win. Sophomore Dawson Campos pitched the seventh inning, escaping from a bases loaded jam, to close out the game.
Douglas had nine hits in the game, led by Matt Santos and Kyle Johnson with two each. The Tigers stranded 10 base runners.
Action in the region tournament continues through Saturday at Peccole Park.
