Douglas alumni golf tournament June 20
May 2, 2014
Players from the Douglas High School football programs past and present will be featured when its third annual Alumni Golf Tournament is held June 20 at the Carson Valley Golf Course.
Douglas Head Coach Ernie Monfiletto said members of the Tigers’ 1974 state championship football team will be recognized along with inductees for the school’s Hall of Fame Class of 2014.
“We choose different alumni or coach to honor every year and this year we’re honoring the 1974 state championship team and coach (Bill) Coverley,” Monfiletto said. “We’ve had a number of responses from that team, which is exciting, really, because those guys are coming from all over the country.”
Forty years ago the Tigers became the only football team in school history to emerge as state champions when they won the AA — what was then Nevada’s medium-sized schools classification — with a 6-0 victory against Fallon at Dressler Field (now the Carson Valley Middle School). The Tigers finished that season with an 8-1-1 record.
Monfiletto also announced the Hall of Fame inductees include Scott Burnham, Shane Miller, Kevin Lehr, Nick Summers and Tyson Estes. Lehr, who passed away in 2006, rushed for 1,597 yards and 27 touchdowns during a 1997 season in which he was honored as the North’s Offensive MVP and league MVP.
The inductees will be recognized again with a ceremony during the Tigers’ Hall of Fame game on Sept. 12 against Reno High.
As for the present, the alumni scholarship committee this week announced its annual scholarship is being presented to seniors Bailey Vidaurri and Taylor Souza. Last year’s scholarship recipient was Michael Hoyt.
Proceeds from the golf tournament go to assist the scholarship fund as well as the Douglas football program, Monfiletto said.
Some openings remain to play in the Friday four-man scramble, scheduled for a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Registration is $125 per person or $500 for a foursome, which includes dinner at the Carson Valley Country Club and all entrants receive a complimentary gift. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100 per hole.
“We still have some foursomes open, but it’s filling up fast,” Monfiletto said.
The tournament is set for a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Contact Monfiletto at firstname.lastname@example.org for information about the tournament or to RSVP.
