Coleville volleyball set for regional tourney
November 5, 2013
Coleville High's volleyball program is back in a familiar position — as league champion.
Coleville (14-2 league, 19-9 overall) swept past Pyramid Lake on Friday to nail down the Western Division IV regular season championship and No. 1 seed into the regional tournament this week in Reno. The Wolves were regional champions from 2009-11.
Eight teams representing the Western and Eastern divisions will compete in the regional tournament Friday and Saturday at Wooster High School. Eureka is the top-seeded team from the East.
The Wolves, who have won 10 of their last 11 matches, open Friday at 6:20 p.m. against No. 4 East seed Owyhee. The winner of that match advances to the semifinals against either Smith Valley or Wells on Saturday at 10 a.m. The championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Wooster.
The two finalists will advance to the state tournament on Nov. 15-16 in Henderson.
Smith Valley (13-3, 18-9) locked up the West's No. 3 seed on Saturday with a 3-0 win at home against Virginia City. Smith Valley has won eight of its last nine matches, however, the hottest team coming into the tournament is Whittell (13-3, 14-10), No. 2 from the West, winner of 11 straight in October. Whittell and Coleville split two matches during the regular season, both winning on their own home courts.
