Jason Trenkle and Ryland DeSomber earned gold medals for Douglas High in their respective weight classes Saturday at the North Valleys junior varsity wrestling tournament in Reno.
Trenkle, a sophomore, won all three of his matches to capture championship honors in his 182-pound weight class and DeSomber, a freshman, went 3-0 to win his 195-pound division on a day when Douglas returned home with six medals overall.
Coach Dave Singer was simply happy to see the young Tigers competing in the tournament.
“We haven’t fielded a JV squad, to the best of my knowledge, in at least six years,” Singer said. “So, yes, I was exited. We had a great day.”
Freshman Will Williams placed third in the 113-pound weight class and sophomore Josh Jensen third in the 170-pound division, both with 3-1 records. For Williams, two of those wins were especially satisfying.
“He avenged two of his earlier losses, and he pinned both of those kids,” Singer said, referring to wins Williams logged against Damonte Ranch and Carson wrestlers.
Freshman 152-pounder Isaiah Schat and junior heavyweight Ian Pieller both came away with fourth-place finishes.
The Douglas wrestling team competes again Friday and Saturday at the Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Livestock Events Center.
