Douglas High School finished fifth overall as a team last Friday in the Tahoe Basin Ski League’s season-opening giant slalom race at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.
The Tigers finished fourth in the boys team standings with 148 points, while the girls were fifth with 128 points. In the combined team scoring, South Tahoe captured first-place with 401 points, followed by North Tahoe (393), Truckee (374), Whittell (305) and Douglas (276). Incline did not compete in the meet.
Senior Grant Dunkelman placed 13th with a combined time of 64.07 seconds for two runs and Tyler Cottrill 14th in 65.08 to lead the Douglas boys. Logan Lalonde placed 26th (75.64), Jon Pelcher 27th (76.31), Wesley Alexander 31st (81.63), Owen Elmquist 32nd (85.01) and Samuel Wilson 33rd (86.1).
North Tahoe’s Lucas Early won the boys race in 57.93, nearly four-tenths of a second ahead of South Tahoe’s Connor McKeen (58.32) in second-place.
The Douglas girls were led by sophomore Tara Cottrill, who placed 20th in 70.42 (34.8 and 35.62). Tess Laub finished 25th in 77.27, Carolyn Wilbur 27th (78.68), Katharine Hill 28th (80.51), Mary Weyland 30th (88.03), Katya Koepsel 31st (93.56), Audrey Muller 32nd (97.99) and Rachel Murphey 33rd (98.46).
South Tahoe’s Maia Bickert won the girls race with a combined time of 60.49, more than 2 seconds faster than Truckee’s Cheyenne Brown in second-place.
Rachel Chen placed fourth for Douglas in the junior varsity girls race with a 91.53 clocking.
In the JV boys race, Danner Hillman turned a time of 70.69, Bryan Harris 84.1, Cole Pinther 85.49, Zach Ingrey 88.68, Logan Kyle 89.87, Callen Gilmartin 90.16, Levi Costa 92.87 and Lars Ponsness 101.91.
The league schedule resumes on Jan. 9 when North Tahoe hosts a giant slalom at Alpine Meadows. Douglas is scheduled to host the regional championship meet on Feb. 13 at Heavenly and the state championships are Feb. 24-25 at Squaw Valley.
