Alexis vonSchottenstein, McKenna Kynett and Kassidy Freitas combined to give the Douglas High girls soccer team a sweep of top individual honors on the recently announced all-Sierra League team.
Kynett was honored as the league’s Offensive Player of the Year, vonSchottenstein as Midfield Player of the Year and Freitas as Defensive Player of the Year for the league champion Tigers.
Douglas ended its season with a 14-2-2 record, with both losses coming against Galena. Both of those defeats were decided by one goal, including a 1-0 setback in the Division I Northern Region Tournament semifinals. Galena went on to post a 1-0 victory against Carson in the region finals.
For Kynett, a sophomore, this marks her second straight first-team all-league selection. VonSchottenstein, the team’s leading scorer as a sophomore in 2011, missed the entire 2012 with a knee injury and returned this fall as a major playmaker. The two were never better than they were on Sept. 17 in a 9-1 win over High Desert League champion Reno — Kynett scored five goals and vonSchottenstein dished out five assists.
Freitas, a senior, was instrumental in a Douglas defense that allowed only nine goals all season. She also delivered the decisive goal for the Tigers in their regular season-ending 1-0 victory at home against arch rival Carson.
Junior Hannah Coverley also repeated as a first-team midfielder.
Alissa Holley, Silvia Fernstrom and Corryne Millett were also voted to the all-league second team. Millett logged 10 shutouts this season.
The all-Sierra League boys team was also announced, however, Douglas had no players selected.
