Douglas sweeps past North Valleys

Katie McCullough and Ariah Barth combined to put down 25 kills on Wednesday night as the Douglas High volleyball team took a step toward what hopefully will be a strong finish to its regular season with a straight set victory at home against North Valleys.

Douglas (2-11 Sierra League, 18-14 overall) cruised past North Valleys (1-12 High Desert League) in the cross-over match by scores of: 25-13, 25-18, 25-12.

McCullough had 13 kills and Barth 12 to lead the Tigers at the net. Shelby Van Winkle narrowly missed a triple-double as the senior was credited 11 service points, including 5 aces, to go with 15 assists and 9 digs.

The Tigers, who hosted Sierra League-leading Bishop Manogue on Thursday (results were unavailable at press time), wrap up their regular season schedule next week when they play on Tuesday against Damonte Ranch and Thursday at home against arch rival Carson.

Douglas was coming off a 3-0 loss on Tuesday at McQueen (10-3) in a cross-over match. McQueen, the High Desert League’s second-place team, won by game scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-21.


Sophomore Aubrey Caires had a big performance at the service line with 16 points, including 12 aces, as Douglas defeated North Valleys 2-1.

Johnnie Saletti also had 13 service points, while Emma Sperry and Caires handed out 11 and 8 assists respectively.

Douglas absorbed its first loss of the season the day before, dropping a 2-0 decision to McQueen. The game scores were 25-14, 25-22.

The JV Tigers are now 19-1 overall for the season.

The JV and frosh teams travel to Sacramento on Saturday to compete in the Carmichael Tournament of Champions at Jackson’s Sports Academy.


Douglas (14-6) defeated North Valleys 2-1.

Hanna Grisell had 19 assists and 10 service points as the Tigers won by game scores of 25-20, 20-25, 16-14.

The frosh team was coming off a 2-0 loss the day before at McQueen 2-0. The game scores were 25-18, 25-11.
