Douglas takes region runner-up honors

The Douglas High girls tennis team saw its undefeated season come to an end Friday with a 15-3 loss against Reno in the Northern Division I Region Team Tournament championship match in Reno.

The defending region champion Reno Huskies (11-0) were in command from the start of the final at Caughlin Athletic Club. Madelyn Landerfelt accounted for two of the Tigers’ points and the other came in the third round from Kelly Sonnemann and Katelin Teigen in doubles.

On Thursday, Douglas (10-1) racked up a 13-5 victory at home against McQueen in a semifinal that was closer than the score shows.

“It was much tighter than the score reflects … lots of nail biters,” Douglas assistant coach Ginny Unger said.

Douglas won three sets in tie-breakers to advance past McQueen (8-2).

The Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team of Kellie Hergenrader and Tara Cottrill won tie-breakers against their second- and third-round opponents — rallying from 4-1 deficits both times. They won the respective tie-breakers by scores of 7-4 and 7-5.

Courtney McKimmey also came from behind to win her first round No. 2 singles set and freshman Maggie Rich won 6-1 at No. 3 singles as the Tigers took an early 4-2 lead. Five of the six sets in the first round were decided by scores of 6-3 or closer.

Landerfelt remained unbeaten for the season as the freshman won each of her three sets.

Team co-captains Sonnemann and Teigen won their three doubles sets.

“They played extremely well today, serving and poaching at the net,” Unger said of Sonnemann and Teigen.

The region individual tournament begins on Wednesday at Carson High School.
