No doubt, the Douglas High football team faces a challenging Sierra League opener tonight against undefeated Galena.
Galena (5-0) is the defending league champion and coming in averaging 42.8 points per game. Although Douglas is 1-4, coach Ernie Monfiletto emphasized the Tigers are looking to start a brand new season.
“The win-loss record only counts if it helps prepare our team for league play,” Monfiletto said. “If we are better now than when we started, yes it matters a great deal, in our benefit. We feel like we’ve improved weekly and we will continue to insist on improving and doing our best to prepare for the next opponent.”
Monfiletto was simple and to the point in listing four keys to beating Galena: “Slowing a very potent Galena offense down and not allowing big plays; our offense needs to establish the run and pass efficiently; win the kicking game; score more points than they do and finish.”
Galena has been dominant in their five games. Quarterback Brock Raggio was passed for 1,031 yards and 13 touchdowns. Ben Barnard has rushed for 1,009 yards and 12 touchdowns.
