Wolves take big win at Smith Valley

The Coleville High volleyball team took a step forward in its bid to reach the Division IV playoffs on Saturday with a 3-2 victory at Smith Valley

Miranda Sturdivant’s all-around performance and 15 kills from Nicole Smith helped Coleville (3-1 league, 7-7 overall) hand Smith Valley (5-1, 12-2) its first league loss. The decision also served as a measure of payback for the Wolves, who lost to Smith Valley at the Yerington Tournament on Aug. 30.

The Wolves won by scores of 25-21 25-19 23-25 20-25 15-11.

After taking an early 2-0 lead, Coleville needed to go to a decisive fifth game.

Aide Merito had three important aces to help the Wolves pull away in the final game, according to coach Kyle Pattison.

Sturdivant had 12 kills, 3 aces and 31 assists for the Wolves. Nicole Smith had a team-high 15 kills. Jackie Saldivar contributed 4 kills, 4 aces and 4 blocks.

Smith Valley was led by outside hitter Katie Ladd with 28 kills. Josy Wortman was credited with 25 digs and 19 service points.

Coleville hosts Silver Stage on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Wolves also visit Sierra Lutheran on Friday and play a double header against Sage Ridge next Saturday.

Virginia City (5-0, 12-2) leads the league after its 3-0 win on Saturday against Mineral County.
