When Douglas High girls tennis coach Susan Cowan looks at her lineup, she doesn’t see a lot of difference between the Tigers’ three doubles teams.
“You know, at any point, any one of those teams we have could be No. 1,” Cowan said, referring to the Sierra League seedings for the Division I Northern Regional Tournament next month.
On Tuesday afternoon, the teams of Ingrid Carlson-Bryana McNamara, Kellie Hergenrader-Tara Cottrill and Kelly Sonnemann-Katelin Teigen combined to score eight points — losing only five games between them — to help the undefeated Tigers top Wooster, 14-4. The sophomore team of Jenna Hammond-Kayleigh Carlson won their third-round match 6-0 to complete the Douglas doubles sweep.
Douglas improved its season record to 6-0. Wooster is now 3-2.
“They’re all playing well right now,” Cowan said of the entire Douglas squad.
Freshman No. 1 singles player Madelyn Landerfelt went 3-0 to remain undefeated for the season. In the closest battle of the day, Courtney McKimmey lost 7-6 (11-9 on the tie-breaker) against Wooster’s No. 1, M.J. Wright.
“That was a heart breaker,” Cowan said. “Courtney fought hard and gave 110 percent. She’ll still be a contender later on (at postseason time).”
