Reed boys take down Douglas

The Douglas High boys tennis team won its first-round No. 1 singles and doubles matches on Thursday, unfortunately for the Tigers, those turned out to be their only wins in a 16-2 defeat at home against Reed.

Douglas (0-5) trailed 4-2 after the opening round as Jon Pelcher won 6-4 while the doubles team of Joey Swisher and Keaton Peters won 6-2.

That was as close as the Tigers would get on a day in which coach Rod Smith described the results as a “real head-scratcher” against Reed (3-1).

“Our match-ups on paper seemed to favor us, especially with the way we’ve been playing of late,” Smith noted. “The results, unfortunately, were decidedly in Reed’s favor. They outplayed us in every way.”

Pelcher dropped a closely contested third-round match against Reed senior Max Poore.

“Jon said he had one of his best high school experiences as a tennis player,” Smith said of Pelcher, a junior. “Jon went out of his way to praise his Reed opponent; saying he was not only a good tennis player, but also a great sportsman. That type of comment from Jon not only speaks volumes for the Reed player (Poore), but for Jon, as well.”

Finding a silver lining, however, wasn’t too hard, the Douglas coach added.

“We were able to give some of our non-starters some valuable playing time,” Smith said. “At some point during the season our team will hit on all cylinders and it will be a beautiful thing.”
