JV volleyball team takes title

The Douglas High junior varsity volleyball team defeated five straight opponents this past weekend to wn the Rail City JV Tournament in Sparks.

Douglas only lost one game along the way, capped by a 2-0 win against Galena Saturday in the finals. The game scores were 25-18, 25-18.

In bracket play, the Tigers defeated Spanish Springs 2-0, (25-13, 25-11) and Damonte Ranch 2-0 (25-12, 25-17). In pool play on Friday, they defeated Truckee 2-1 (26-24, 25-21, 22-25) and Reno 3-0 (26-24, 29-27, 25-8).

Aubrey Caires led the team with 37 kills during the tournament. Johnnie Saletti also contributed 20 kills, Isabelle Peterson and sophomore Sophie Byrne had 16 each and Emma Sperry 12. Byrne led the team with nine blocks.

Saletti scored 51 service points, including 14 aces. Sperry had 108 assists and 33 service points. Freshman Raychel Allen led the defense with 39 digs.


The Douglas freshmen went 5-1 to capture second-place in the Rail City Freshman Tournament at Reed High School on Saturday.

Douglas’ only loss came in the championship match against the Virginia City JV team, 2-0 (26-24, 25-18).

In bracket play Douglas beat Damonte Ranch 2-0 (25-12, 25-17) and posted an inspiring come-from-behind 2-1 win in the semifinals against Reno (16-25, 25-23, 16-14).

The Tigers won their pool by defeating Truckee 2-1 (25-14, 16-25, 15-9), Hug 2-0 (25-19, 25-19) and Reno 2-0 (25-21, 25-21).

Douglas was led statistically at the net by Natasha Culpepper with 24 kills, Brynn Roth Rothfusz 13, Allison Dodd 11 and Ashley Campagna 11.

Natalie Smith 38 and Hanna Grisell delivered 36 service points respectively, while Grisell led the team with 18 aces.

Coach Klaus Leitenbauer also praised the defensive performance of libero Kaitlyn Palaroan, who “provided solid and strong defensive play all day,” adding that Jaden Peterson played well in her first action at the libero position this season.
