The Douglas High volleyball team took another step in preparation for its league season this past weekend when it won six of seven matches at the Yerington Tournament.
Douglas (14-3) opened its league season on Tuesday with a match at home against defending Division I state champion Spanish Springs (results were not available at press time), and visits Reed on Thursday.
The Tigers won three straight matches Friday during pool play and then came back on Saturday to go 3-1. The Tigers’ only loss came in a closely contested match against Dayton, the eventual tournament runner-up.
Dayton (15-1), coming off a championship at Lowry High’s State Farm Classic the week before in Winnemucca, defeated Douglas in three games by scores of 16-25, 26-16, 15-13.
Dayton eventually lost to tournament host Yerington in an all-Lyon County championship match, 25-23, 25-21.
The Dust Devils are led by Madison Foley, a fourth-year varsity veteran who was the I-A Lahontan League co-player of the year in 2012.
Douglas won another three-game match against Bishop, Calif., a CIF Southern Section playoff qualifier in 2012. The Tigers won 25-16, 21-25, 15-5.
The Tigers won two other matches on Saturday: 25-8, 25-15 against Smith Valley and 25-18, 25-16 against Lowry.
