Douglas High School had multiple cancellations on Tuesday and Wednesday of sporting events due to smoke conditions.
The Tigers’ season-opening girls soccer and tennis matches were called off on Tuesday, as were the girls golf match at Genoa Lakes and the boys soccer contest on Wednesday due to air quality issues stemming from the Rim fire near Yosemite. The status of tennis matches today against Churchill County High School are still to be decided (the girls will play in Fallon, however, the boys match at Douglas remains up in the air). A decision remains to be made for the Douglas football team’s scheduled game Friday night against McQueen in Reno.
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association ruled schools in Douglas, Carson, Storey, Washoe and Mono (Calif.) counties would not be allowed to compete or practice outside on Wednesday. Lyon, Churchill and El Dorado, Placer and Nevada (all in Calif.) counties were in the acceptable air-quality index range to compete and practice.
A determination to allow for practice and competition outdoors on Thursday will be made by the NIAA at 1 p.m.
