Sunday update: Bison fire up to 9,300 acres

Firefighters lost ground against the Bison fire burning this afternoon east of Gardnerville, with an unknown number of commercial structures lost to the flames, as the fire grew to 9,300 acres and containment dropped to 15 percent.

The fire is making a run to the northeast and is burning through the Slater Mine area, according to an update issued by fire officials at 6:17 p.m. nSunday

“No injuries have been reported at this time however, firefighters are reporting a large amount of local traffic in the area, and are asking that if you do not have to be in the area please stay away and stay safe,” said fire information officer Dorothy Harvey. “Watching fire is safer from a distance.”

Pinenut Road remains closed to nonresidents at the intersection of Out-R-Way and more road closures may follow. A voluntary evacuation notice remains in effect for about 20 structures in the area.

The fire has been burning since 3:30 p.m. Thursday, when it was set by lightning.

Winds picked up and shifted to the southwest this afternoon, blowing steadily at 20 mph, gusting to 38 mph at 4:33 p.m. at the Fish Springs Volunteer Fire Station. Relative humidity is at 11 percent.

The price tag is up to $1.2 million for the fire as it burns continues to burn in piñon and juniper.

A baker’s dozen hand crews continued to make progress on a line around the fire, bringing containment to 30 percent as 18 engines continue to protect structures. Ground forces will receive help from nine air tankers, including two owned by Minden Air.

Fire information will continue to be updated at www.sierrafront.net, www.inciweb.org, and on the Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators and Douglas County’s pages on Facebook.
