The Douglas High School softball team split two games on Day 2 and split another two on Day 3 of the Victory Tournament in Sacramento over the weekend.
Douglas opened Friday with a 3-2 win over Franklin and lost to Ponderosa 8-7. The Lady Tigers finished pool play in second place. On Saturday, the Tigers fell to St. Francis 8-3 in the first round of elimination before rebounding to defeat Christian Brothers 5-4.
Against Franklin, Kali Sargent picked up the win in her first career varsity start, striking out one, walking none and scattering eight hits in the complete game.
For the second day in a row, Douglas fought back from an early deficit, getting two runs in the fifth inning to go ahead for the win.
Kelly Sonnemann drove in a pair of runs and Julia Gomez had Douglas’ other RBI. Sonnemann also went 2-for-3 while Katie Kluever, Allison Meyer, Kaitlyn Bowman, Katie Chieffo and Gomez each had one hit. Meyer also stole a base.
Against Ponderosa, Douglas again battled back from an early deficit, and took a lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a three-run rally, but Ponderosa came back with two runs in the sixth to win it.
Sonnemann hit a home run, drove in four runs and stole a base in the loss. Meyer hit a triple, Leonna Mortimer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Gomez drove in another run.
Meyer and Sonnemann each collected two hits while Kluever, Makayla Shaver, Sergeant and Chieffo each had one hit.
Against St. Francis, Leonna Mortimer drove in three runs to lead the Tigers.
Sargent picked up her second win of the tournament, striking out four and walking one.
Kluever went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while Sonnemann, Shaver and McKinnon each drove in a run.
