Falcons sweep Division IV titles

Chase Johnson was a double gold medal winner in the boys throws while Sabrina Rotato and Cali Benton combined to win the girls shot put and discus to help Sierra Lutheran High School sweep both Division IV team titles at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships in Carson City.

Sierra Lutheran’s girls clinched their team title Saturday with a victory in the 4x400 relay to conclude two days of competition at Carson High School’s Jim Frank Track and Field Complex.

The Falcons edged Beatty 114-104 to capture the girls team championship and the boys amassed 129 points to outdistance Spring Mountain (96) and Virginia City (88) for top honors.

Sierra Lutheran took home all four gold medals in the Division IV throws, as Johnson won the shot put (51-2) and discus (135-11). The senior threw a personal best in the shot put to edge Virginia City’s Steven Punchard (50-1-1/4).

Sabrina Ronato won the girls shot put with a personal record throw of 32-5 and Cali Benton the discus (101-0).

Camille Cassidy won the girls 400 meters (1:01.84), Michael Patrick cleared a personal record height in the boys high jump (5-8) and Jusdan Mondragon the boys 300-meter intermediate hurdles (43.21).

Sierra Lutheran’s girls team held a one-point lead over Beatty going into the 4x400 at the end of the meet, and needed only to cross the finish line with the baton to secure the title. The Falcons took an early lead and never looked back as Kimberly Eckert, Rebekah Churchill, Cady Contreras and Torreyana Sanguinetti ran to first-place in their season-best time of 4:26.46. Churchill, Contreras and Sanguinetti also ran for the Falcons’ 2013 state gold medal 4x400 relay team.

Cassidy had a busy weekend with four events on the track for the Falcons, as the junior also placed second in the 800 (2:38.24) and 100 (13.67), and third in the 200 (28.16, personal best).

Davison, Emma Herron, Hannah Martinez and Oliva Zeron placed third in the 4x800 relay (11:36.68).

Katy Cobb placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (18.41) and third in the 300-meter low hurdles (52.29).

Amy Westre placed third in the discus (99-1) and Kristy Missamore sixth in the shot put (30-3).

Cali Benton placed third with personal best marks in the triple jump (31-9-3/4) and sixth in the long jump (14-5-1/4). Freshman Grace Bonafede placed fifth with a personal best in the triple jump (30-9-3/4).

Clare Davison also placed fourth in the 800 (2:41.42). Sanguinetti, a sophomore, placed fourth in the 400 (1:05.34).

On the boys side, Mondragon placed second in the 110 high hurdles (17.06) and Ryan West seventh (19.81). Jake Forvilly placed fourth in the 300 hurdles (46.52).

Sierra Lutheran went 3-4-5 in the triple jump with Patrick (39-5), Forvilly (38-9-1/2) and Domineaq Wilson (37-10-3/4). Patrick also placed fourth (18-9) and Forvilly seventh (17-4) in the long jump. West placed fourth in the pole vault (9-0) and seventh in the 110 high hurdles (19.81, personal best).

Junior Chris Eckert and freshman Ricky McNeely placed second and third in the 3,200 with respective times of 11:00.47 and 11:10.43. Whittell freshman Cole Snyder won the race in 10:53.99.

Donovan Harrison placed second in the 800 for the second year in a row, as the senior ran 2:05.68. Whittell’s Mark Waite blazed through the first lap in 54.5 seconds en route to the gold medal (2:00.21).

Eckert, McNeely, Joel Henry and Donovan Harrison placed second in the 4x800 relay (9:11.43), just three seconds off the winning pace set by Whittell.

Sierra Lutheran took second-place in the 4x100 relay as the team of Cole Contreras, Zach Wiles, Forvilly and Patrick ran 48.59.

Nick Walker, freshman Jacob Rodriguez, Mondragon and Wiles placed fourth in the 4x200 relay (1:40.45). Mondragon, Joel Henry, Walker and Rodriguez placed fourth in the 4x400 relay (3:51.38).

Rodriguez ran a personal record time of 24.66 to place fourth in the 200.
