Tigers await tough test at state swimming and diving

Douglas High School will lead the North into Las Vegas Saturday for the NIAA Division I State Swimming and Diving Championships in Las Vegas.

After sweeping the boys and girls team titles this past weekend at the Northern region meet, however, the Tigers know they have their work cut out for them at the state meet.

“It’s going to be really tough,” said senior Janosch Lancaster, who provided the Tigers with an early boost at the regional with his victory in the 200-yard individual medley. “They have club teams down there (in Las Vegas) with more than 1,000 kids.”

Numbers are important at the state meet.

“We tried to qualify as many for state as possible,” Lancaster added. “We’re going to give it our best shot. That’s all you can do.”

The Division I diving begins at 8 a.m. and swimming at 11 a.m. at UNLV’s Buchanan Natatorium.

Looking South, Coronado scored close to 500 points in both the boys and girls divisions to sweep the Sunrise Region team championships. Bishop Gorman won the Sunset Region girls team by a 493-475 margin over Palo Verde, and on the boys side, Palo Verde rolled up 474 points to win the title.

One of the featured matchups of the meet could be the girls 100 freestyle, where Douglas sophomore Shelby Koontz is the defending state champion. She will be up against University of Tennessee-bound Amy Lubawy of Bishop Gorman, who set Sunset region records in both the 100 (50.46) and 50 freestyle (24.17). Koontz clocked times of 52.14 and 23.82 to win the respective events at the region meet, and capped off her day by clocking 50.5 for her leg of the 400 freestyle relay.

Tay Lopez-Simms qualified for state in his first season as a diver when he posted a score of 343.60 to take third-place. The senior only qualified for the regional one week before in the Tigers’ regular season-ending meet.
