A lot has happened for the Galena High School softball team since its 8-6 loss on April 5 at the hands of Douglas at the Reed Spring Tournament.
Galena hasn’t lost since then and Saturday the Grizzlies extended their win streak to six straight games with a come-from-behind 6-3 triumph at home against Douglas.
Galena (13-9 overall, 8-4 league) scored four runs in the fourth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit en route to an important Northern Division I win.
Douglas (15-7-2 overall, 9-3 league) scored twice in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Galena answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and then added two more runs in the sixth to push the lead to 6-1.
Caitlin Laycox pitched a complete game eight-hitter to go with seven strikeouts and no walks on a day when the Grizzlies committed four errors. The senior right-hander has been the winning pitcher in each of Galena’s six wins, including a four-hit shutout performance to win at Douglas on Thursday.
Sophomore Alyssa Martinez went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead Galena’s 12-hit attack. Aubrey Slocum also hit 3-for-4 with two RBI and Baileigh Loux 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
This marks the first time all season the Tigers have lost back-to-back games. The schedule isn’t getting any easier, either, as Douglas hosts Spanish Springs (16-4-1 overall, 11-1 league) Saturday in an 11 a.m. doubleheader. The Tigers were third in the league standings coming into this week, two games behind Reed amd Spanish Springs.
