Douglas and Spanish Springs, two teams that met to open their season on Dec. 4 in Minden, will face off Tuesday night in a rematch tonight to open the Division I Northern Region girls basketball playoffs.
Douglas (19-8), the Sierra League’s No. 2 seed, hosts Spanish Springs (18-7), the High Desert League’s third-place representative, in a 7 p.m. game at Randy Green Green. And Werner Christen, for one, fully expects to see a much different game than the December contest the Tigers won, 47-20.
“I started watching film on Spanish Springs last night and they’ve improved a lot since the start of the season,” the Douglas coach said Friday night. “They’re playing very well right now.”
Spanish Springs finished its regular season with a four-game win streak, including 54-51 win Friday at Reed. The Cougars are led by the nucleus of Hannah Woytek, Mariah Vargas. Woytek, Katrina Prendergast and Heather Tauchen. Woytek had 19 points and 11 assists in the Cougars’ 59-57 win at McQueen last week.
“Woytek is a star in this league,” Christen said of the senior point guard. “If you let her get going, they’re very dangerous.”
Douglas also ended its regular season on an upbeat note with a 46-35 win against Carson. Jessie Jim scored 13 points and Corryne Millett 9 to lead the Tigers offensively.
