Freshmen Will Williams and Ryan Adams led off with first period pins in their 113- and 120-pound matches Wednesday to put the Douglas High wrestling team on track to a 42-40 Sierra League dual meet victory against Wooster.
Cody Lewis, yet another freshman, won the 160-pound match by fall in the second period to help clinch the Senior Night victory for Douglas in its final regular season outing. The Tigers finished 3-2 in league dual meets, the team’s first winning record in league since 2009.
Four forfeit wins, worth 24 points, was the difference for a young Douglas lineup that featured seven freshmen.
Three of those freshmen were difference-makers, as Williams and Adams logged identical 1:53 pin times to give Douglas a 12-0 lead. The match was the first in nearly two weeks for Williams, who has been nursing an elbow injury.
After Wooster surged to a 28-12 lead, Lewis won with 12 seconds remaining in the second period to keep the Tigers within reach at a time when they had those four forfeit matches coming up.
Wednesday was the Tigers’ final action before the Division I Northern Region Tournament on Feb. 14-15 at Reno High School.
