Douglas girls face big test

First-place in the Sierra League girls basketball race will be at stake Friday when Douglas hosts Bishop Manogue.

Douglas moved into a tie for the lead Tuesday with a 58-43 win at McQueen, coupled with Manogue’s 49-26 loss against High Desert League-leading Reno. Beforehand, Douglas coach Werner Christen made it a point to make sure all business was taken care of first before preparation began for Manogue.

“We have four (league) games left … McQueen is fighting for a playoff spot, Damonte Ranch is fighting for a playoff spot, Carson is fighting for a playoff spot,” Christen said after the Tigers rallied for a 39-27 win at Galena Friday. “Those are all tough games and the kids know how important it is to take it one game at a time. We’re not even going to mention Manogue to them until Wednesday.”

Douglas (18-6 overall, 11-2 league) is now riding a seven-game win streak, its last loss coming Jan. 10 at Manogue, 64-51.

The Tigers had their hands full Friday night, however, after Galena scored 10 unanswered points in the first quarter to take a 12-2 lead. It was a much different from their Dec. 20 meeting in Minden, which ended in a 46-19 win for Douglas.

“They punched us in the gut,” Christen said. “But the kids responded. They came back and played well in the second half.”

Jessie Jim scored 11 points, 9 of which came in the second half, to lead the Tigers offensively. Christen pointed out the senior guard turned in a strong all-around performance.

“Jessie played her best game of the year,” the coach said. “She ignited our comeback — both defensively and offensively. She just played smart on both ends of the floor.”

Christen also mentioned the defensive effort of McKenna Kynett against Galena’s Kaitlyn Hawthorne, an all-region selection last year, who finished with 6 points on two 3-pointers.

Paige Brown led Galena with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
